Sellwood Bridge Reconstruction
Project Overview
Multnomah County needed to replace the 87-year old Sellwood Bridge crossing the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon with a new seismically-sound structure. This bridge is the busiest two-lane bridge in the state of Oregon.
McCallum Rock Drilling was a subcontractor on this project. Drilling and blasting was located adjacent to the existing Sellwood Bridge on OR 43 to widen the roadway for the new OR 43/Sellwood Bridge intersection.
Details
- Owner: Multnomah County
- Project Type: Highways & Roads
- Location: Portland, OR
- Completion Date: Fall 2016
Challenges
McCallum Rock Drilling conducted four blasting operations. Each blast occurred during the night hours to minimize the impact to the public.
The City of Portland’s water main was within 50 feet of the blast site. Stringent vibration levels required by the city and state were met. Multiple seismographs were installed at various structures to record ground vibration and air overpressure.
Outcome
The project went smoothly with no impacts to structures and no complaints from the public. The new Sellwood Bridge opened in November 2016.
